The 10th Lublin University of Technology Scientific Expedition to Central Asia took place from May 11–22, 2025, organized by the Department of Computer Science at the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The expedition, which operated in Uzbekistan, included Prof. Jerzy Montusiewicz, Prof. Marek Miłosz, and Dr. Elżbieta Miłosz. The focus of the Lab 3D group’s staff is the 3D digitization of cultural heritage objects found along the ancient Silk Road.

During the 10th expedition, 3D scanning and photogrammetry of cultural heritage objects were conducted, along with teaching sessions and official and working meetings with representatives of various universities and museums in Uzbekistan. Highlights of the expedition included:

  • Meeting with Prof. Dilbar Mukhamedova from the National University of Uzbekistan (Tashkent) on continuing and developing further cooperation,
    visit to the Polish Embassy in Tashkent and meeting with the Embassy’s Chagé d’Affaires, Marcin Waker;
  • 3D LIDAR scanning of a monument dedicated to the deceased Poles who formed General Władysław Anders’ Army and the richly carved traditional wooden Uzbek columns;
  • close-range photogrammetry of the madrasas forming the Registan complex in Samarkand – over 500 images taken from the minaret and roof of the Ulugh Beg madrasa (4 GB of data);
  • visit to Dr. Samibayev Masud Kimovich – Director of the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Republic of Uzbekistan and participation in the international museum festival;
  • 3D scanning of museum artifacts at the Samarkand State Museum-Reserve using LIDAR technology (richly carved wooden doors, ossuaries, ceramics);
    visit to Rahim Kayumov – Director of the Scientific-Experimental Museum-Laboratory – a facility belonging to Samarkand State University and 3D scanning using LIDAR technology (the same museum artifacts that were digitized in 2017 using Artec Spider and Eva scanners using structured light technology);
  • visit to the Vice-Rector of Samarkand State University, named Sharof Rashidov – Prof. Akhatov Rustamovich and holding discussions on continuing cooperation and initiating, together with Prof. Sazzad Hossain, activities related to the preparation of joint research projects;
  • a visit to the Vice-Rector of Urgench State University, Prof. Sardor Khodjaniyazov, and Prof. Utkir Abdullaev, and discussions regarding continued cooperation;
  • 3D LIDAR scanning of freestanding objects in Khiva (richly carved wooden columns and doors, stone and wooden column bases) and in the palace of the Khan of Khiva (including functional ceramics);
  • a visit to the Rector, Prof. Gafurdjan Mukhamedov, and discussions regarding continued cooperation.

During the expedition, 3D scanning of over 35 objects was performed, obtaining data in the form of 3D mesh models with a total size of over 1 GB.
