7th Scientific Expedition – 2022

7th Scientific Expedition of the Lublin University of Technology to Central Asia

On 6-18.05.2022, a team of scientists and computer scientists was in Uzbekistan on the 7th Scientific Expedition of the Lublin University of Technology to Central Asia. The expedition was carried out as part of the “3D Digital Silk Road” project, financed by the National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) as part of the Academic International Partnership program (https://cs.pollub.pl/projects/3d-digital-silk-road-digitalizacja -historic-silk-trail-in-uzbekistan /). It was the fourth expedition (including the virtual one) financed by the project. The expedition was attended by the employees of the Department of Computer Science at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science: Dr. Elżbieta Miłosz (project manager), Prof. Jerzy Montusiewicz, Prof. Marek Miłosz, Dr. Korga’s Sylwester, Dr. Tomasz Szymczyk and Anna Sałamacha.

The expedition operated in Uzbekistan in the cities of Samarkand, Bukhara and Shahrisabz. During it, the following activities were carried out:

  • Scanning the interior of the Golden Mosque in Madras Tillya-Kori (for the third time in the history of the expeditions, to determine the rate of building deposition).
  • Scanning of the Tillya-Kori madrassa entrance portal to determine the tilt of the madrasah minarets (suspected tilt).
  • Scanning of the inner courtyard of Ulug Beka madrassa and its outer walls.
  • 3D scanning of small museum artifacts from the exhibition “History of Samarkand” in the Ulug Beka madrassa and at the Integrated Museum of History, Architecture and Samarkand Art.
  • Scanning the inside of a yurt (nomad tent) at the Integrated Museum of Historical and Architectural and Samarkand Art and staging of Samarkand scholars in Ulug Beka madrassa.
  • Scanning of a sextant from the Ulug Beka Astronomical Observatory at the Ulug Beka Museum in Samarkand.
  • Scanning of the upper courtyard and four mausoleums and entrance portal to the Shahi Zinda complex.
  • Scanning (for the first time ever) of the Bibi Khanum Mosque.
  • Ak Saray scanning at Shahrisabz.

By the way:

  • The Director of the Ulug Beka Museum in Samarkand was handed over two banknotes from the 1980s with the face value of 1000 old zlotys with the image of Nicolaus Copernicus to supplement the museum’s collection.
  • Participation in the conference “Modern problems of applied mathematics and information technology” at the Bukhara State University with the following speeches:
    • Modern problems of 3D scanning of cultural heritage objects – “3D Digital Silk Road” project // Elżbieta Milosz, Jerzy Montusiewicz, Marek Milosz, Rahim Kayumov
    • Digital documentation of monuments – modern information technologies and methodologies // Tomasz Szymczyk, Jacek Kęsik, Jerzy Montusiewicz, Khonkul Samarov, Utkir Abdullayev
    • Virtual museum for education and popularization of cultural heritage // Stanisław Skulimowski, Marek Milosz, Dilbar Mukhamedova, Samariddin Mustafokulov

The implementation of such extensive work in such a short time was possible thanks to the great commitment of the employees of the partner university – the Samarkand State University, and the Samarkand city museums cooperating with the Lublin University of Technology.
