The Shah-i-Zinda ensemble
Shodi Mulk Oko Mausoleum
The Shodi Mulk Oko Mausoleum is one of the most beautiful gems of the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis in Samarkand. It was erected in 1372 by order of Turkan Oko, the sister of the mighty ruler Amir Timur (Tamerlane). The structure serves as the resting place for Turkan’s daughter, Shodi Mulk, who passed away at a young age; later, the foundress herself was also buried there. Other family members are likely buried here as well. The building is renowned for its extraordinary ceramic decoration, crafted almost entirely in majolica and glazed terracotta. Inside, the mausoleum impresses with its high dome and exquisite decorations that have survived the centuries in nearly pristine condition. It is one of the first structures in the complex to initiate the Timurid architectural style, blending monumentality with jewelry-like precision.
